Inspired by the brightest star in the constellation ‘Polaris,’ it references the city’s nautical heritage; the points of a star surround a compass rose. Simultaneously evoking celestial navigation and “following the star”, with the compass that always points North.
The artwork acts as a large glowing beacon in the heart of Liverpool that draws the viewer in, immerses them in a central Compass of Light and then invites them to travel through the surrounding constellation of columns, each intended to represent the pillars of Liverpool’s culture; the people, music, art, trade, education and sport.
The artwork pays homage to how far and wide Liverpool’s culture has spread and, in return, the worldwide influences seen in the city today.
